So, if you follow me on FB, you saw the process. \u00a0Which is to say, I posted that I bought some salmon that my kids would never eat.<\/p>\n

Then I realized that, “Shit, I should do something about this \u00a0This is why people hire me.” \u00a0Huh.<\/p>\n

So, I had a cup of coffee and thought.<\/p>\n

The word that appeared was EXPECTATIONS<\/span>. (Which is, yes, how things happen to me. \u00a0They appear. \u00a0Words. Images. People. \u00a0My dead father-in-law comes to me when I meditate. \u00a0Crazy? \u00a0Maybe, but you are already reading this, so hang in…)<\/p>\n

I often assume<\/span><\/strong> (is there anything more dangerous in parenting?) that my children know what I am thinking and wanting from them.<\/p>\n

Yeah…ummm, they don’t. \u00a0I needed to make it explicit. \u00a0Again.<\/p>\n

And I have been quite busy helping other people have great meals with their kids…and guess what? \u00a0I have been blowing off my own family.<\/p>\n

Oh sure, we all sit together and have a cursory dinner. \u00a0“What are you grateful for?” \u00a0Blah blah blah. \u00a0I have been checking it off the list, half-in (which means half-out), and frankly, making some pretty shitty dinners. \u00a0Who wants to celebrate Kraft? \u00a0Not me. \u00a0Not even my kids.<\/p>\n

So, the letter. \u00a0The letter was about setting about some expectations for them. \u00a0Sure.<\/p>\n

It was really for ME.<\/p>\n

“Hey, kids. \u00a0Mom is going to make you a real dinner. \u00a0It is going to have antioxidants and vitamins and it cooked in way that demonstrates care and skill!”<\/p>\n

“Hey kids, I want you to know I am taking this seriously. \u00a0And yes, it is $22 a pound, but that is not why I care. I am taking it seriously because I have forgotten to show up for dinner properly<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The nine year old declared dinner, “Not disgusting.”<\/p>\n

The six year old took a bite and dramatically spit into the trash (I appreciated the theatrical nature of her disapproval).<\/p>\n

The almost three year old only wanted to know what her father was going to do. \u00a0When he ate it with gusto, she decided to eat it with tacit\u00a0acquiescence.<\/p>\n

The lovely outcome? \u00a0NO ONE ASKED ME FOR WHEATIES.<\/p>\n

They always ask for Wheaties with bananas when they don’t want whatever is served for dinner.<\/p>\n

The answer is always no, unless I am too<\/em> fucking<\/em>\u00a0tired to hear it.<\/em><\/p>\n

So, everyone sat there for about ten good minutes. \u00a0Everyone ate the rice and vegetables, and picked at the fish.<\/p>\n

Success.<\/p>\n
