I sent my kids to the beach this week (to be with my parents).<\/p>\n

How wonderful it will be, I thought, just me and my hubby.<\/p>\n

It’s been a long winter and we are connecting poorly.<\/p>\n

This time THIS TIME is what we need.<\/p>\n

Upon driving home, I call him. “I dropped them off! \u00a0We are FREE.”<\/p>\n

Hubby: \u00a0“I just started throwing up. \u00a0I feel like shit.”<\/p>\n

Me: \u00a0“Oh.”<\/p>\n

Oh, yes. \u00a0I thought of his welfare first (no I didn’t).<\/p>\n

And yes, I worried about how he would get to work (nope, not at all).<\/p>\n

Okay\u2026maybe I was a tiny bit PISSED OFF.<\/p>\n

We were SUPPOSED TO CONNECT, GODDAMMIT.<\/p>\n

I HAD MADE A PLAN. \u00a0WE HAD CONCERT TICKETS.<\/p>\n

Karen Maezen Miller<\/a> talks about meditating facing the wall. \u00a0The wall can be a literal wall (which really does suck by the way, until it is an odd relief..and then it is wonderful). \u00a0Or the wall can be your tantrum-throwing child. \u00a0Or the wall can be your canceling client. \u00a0Or the wall can be the rain on your photo-shoot day.<\/p>\n

Or the wall can be your vomiting husband when you have MADE PLANS.<\/p>\n

WE ALL FACE THE WALL.<\/p>\n

All of the time. \u00a0Day after day. \u00a0Sometimes minute after minute.<\/p>\n

I e-mailed every human I know and pleaded, “I have a concert ticket\u2026will you come? \u00a0Please…”<\/p>\n

Sorry, Meghan\u2026no. \u00a0I am traveling. \u00a0I cannot, I am busy. \u00a0I am tired.<\/p>\n

The wall of purchased tickets and no one to come.<\/p>\n

I went by myself. \u00a0I sat by myself. \u00a0I drank a gin and tonic, by myself.<\/p>\n

And the music was\u00a0better<\/em>.<\/p>\n

No one to make small talk with\u2026no one to check in on\u2026no one to say, “HEY, aren’t we CONNECTING SO WELL?”<\/p>\n

I bounced my head to the music. \u00a0I watched these people create total craziness (do you know how fucking creative people are?<\/em>)<\/p>\n

I came home and took care of my husband. \u00a0Got him the ginger ale and chicken soup.<\/p>\n

He’s doing better.<\/p>\n

Life will present what it needs to, when it needs to present it.<\/p>\n

And the hubby and me? \u00a0We are all good. \u00a0As soon as I dropped my desperate need to attach<\/em>\u2026we were all good.<\/p>\n

Huh.<\/p>\n
