Three years ago, my family and I started attending a family camp in the hopes of starting our own traditions.\u00a0 I had attended a camp with my family when I was younger, and absolutely loved the fact that I could hang with friends during the day and evenings, and see my parents at meal times.\u00a0 I can remember the freedom; running around the woods of Pennsylvania, and the exhilaration mixed with the safety of knowing where I was and whom I was with.\u00a0 My parents do not factor strongly into my memories\u2026they are there, but a shadowy presence of stability.\u00a0 It is all friends, boating, horses, crafts, bathing suits, hiking, and longingly watching the bigger kids slow dance with each other.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward a couple (ahem) of years, and I am looking down into the sassy, beautiful, two-front-teeth-missing, know-it-all face of my eldest daughter.\u00a0 She is loudly expressing her deep disgust with my controlling ways, and she \u201ccannot CANNOT believe\u201d I won\u2019t just leave her alone.\u00a0 She is sorry<\/em> she was late, but it\u2019snotabigdeal, <\/em>MOOOOOOOOM.\u00a0 She wants to hang out with her friends and THAT IS THAT.<\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/p>\n

I can hear the voices now.\u00a0 \u201cYou woulda had your mouth smacked for that<\/em> kind of talk\u201d or \u201cnip this in the bud now, or she will sass you forever.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re losing her.\u00a0 Show her who\u2019s the boss in this relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/p>\n

I stayed silent and looked at her.\u00a0 She stared back.\u00a0 Finally, she said, \u201cMaybe I just need a watch, Mom.\u00a0 Okay?\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s right.\u00a0 She needs a watch.\u00a0 And she just wants to go meet three other seven-year-old girls so they can follow the older kids around, in a pack of safety.<\/p>\n

I recognized this as one of those \u201cmoments;\u201d those parenting moments where you can decide to fight, to hold on to what cannot be held, to assert my own needs and insecurities onto my child, and above all, to parent out of fear.<\/p>\n

I smiled at my daughter, kneeled down and said, \u201cYes, you need a watch.\u00a0 Please don\u2019t be late again or you will stay in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay Mom, bye.\u201d<\/p>\n

The screen door slammed and she ran out, ran to freedom, to watching the big kids\u2026away from me.<\/p>\n
