What changes do we need to make NOW?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"large-12 columns entry-content__output non-vc-entry\">Why did I, a parent coach, find myself in a cab heading toward the National Archives last Wednesday?\u00a0 I was going to learn about a policy briefing with Congressional and transportation industry leaders about\u2026teen driving and safety.\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 I am about helping parent with little kids, so what was this about?<\/p>\n<p>A friend, who was part of this event, (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/standup.allstate.com\/\">Allstate<\/a> Kicks Off Sponsorship of <a href=\"hhttp:\/\/thehill.com\/video\/in-the-news\/183325-lawmakers-stand-up-for-teen-driving-safetyttp:\/\/\">THE HILL<\/a>\u2019s \u201cA Healthy America\u201d<\/strong>) thought of me and invited me along and I thought, \u201cThis has nothing to do with me.\u201d\u00a0 And then I read this:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe speakers will examine the risks associated with motor vehicle crashes remaining the <strong>number one killer of American teenagers<\/strong>. <strong>More than 4,000 teens die each year on our nation\u2019s roads in crashes involving young drivers<\/strong>.\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/\">The Hill<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That is 155 kids a week.\u00a0 ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE CHILDREN A WEEK DIE IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS.<\/p>\n<p>These children have mothers and fathers, and these children were once three and four and five years old.\u00a0 These kids went off for their first day of school, learned to ride a bike, lost their teeth and played in the yard.\u00a0 These kids are our kids and it MATTERS that they are dead.<\/p>\n<p>There is a movement, a very good movement, to stem the violence, depression, and alienation from <a href=\"http:\/\/kidshealth.org\/teen\/your_mind\/problems\/bullies.html\">teen bullying<\/a>.\u00a0 As well, <a href=\"http:\/\/aacap.org\/page.ww?name=Teen+Suicide&amp;section=Facts+for+Families\">teen suicide <\/a>is a terrible reality for so many families and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/suicide.aspx\">interventions<\/a> have been shown to work with depressed teens.<\/p>\n<p>And now, there needs to be a movement to stop teen deaths from motor vehicle crashes.<\/p>\n<p>The number one way to help your child grow up to be a safe driver is to STOP the distracted driving.\u00a0 YOU.\u00a0 Putting on makeup, searching through purses, eating, fiddling with the radio, reaching for files; we KNOW we are distracted when we do those things.\u00a0 It is the texting and the chatting on the phones that simply must stop.<\/p>\n<p>Children do not do as we say; they do as we do.\u00a0 We cannot expect them to model behaviors we do not show them.\u00a0 If you are texting at red lights, waiting to make calls when you start to drive, returning messages and e-mails on your smart phone and your car engine is on?\u00a0 You are driving distracted.<\/p>\n<p>I am not saying this is easy.\u00a0 Some of the only quiet moments I seem to get are in the car and it is so tempting to return a call, make a long-overdue appointment, or shoot a quick text to a friend.\u00a0 I get it.<\/p>\n<p>But kids do not understand our busy lives, and they are not going to care about our excuses when they are 16, 17, or 18 years old.\u00a0 And science tells us that their teen brains have trouble \u201clooking around the corner\u201d to consequences, so let\u2019s draw the boundaries now.<\/p>\n<p>Make it a family value that, when we are in the car, it is phone-free zone.\u00a0 No texting, e-mail checking, or chatting.<\/p>\n<p>Parents, put your phone on silent and put it behind your seat, where you cannot reach it.\u00a0 Ask your kids to hold you responsible.\u00a0 Sign a family contract.<\/p>\n<p>155 children a week are killed in cars.\u00a0 We cannot control random and horrible accidents, and we cannot control what others do.\u00a0 But we can be the example for our own children to be safe when it is their turn to take the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>155 kids <strong>a week<\/strong>\u00a0are killed in car crashes.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s be the example&#8230;now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why did I, a parent coach, find myself in a cab heading toward the National Archives last Wednesday?\u00a0 I was going to learn about a policy briefing with Congressional and transportation industry leaders about\u2026teen driving and safety.\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 I am about helping parent with little kids, so what was this about?
