I have been reading the Momastery<\/a> blog and I connect to her. \u00a0Her writing is good (albeit a tad religious for my taste), and her sincerity and rawness flies off the page.\u00a0 She talks about \u201cdoing hard things,\u201d and she has done hard things, as well as continues to. \u00a0I like reading her; I like her voice.<\/p>\n

I have studied \u201chard things.\u201d\u00a0 Things like abnormal psychology, severe disorders, and grave tragedies; what happens to the brain when these issues seemingly hijack a person.\u00a0 I have learned \u201cproper responses\u201d to many of them, but only truly an expert in some of the them.\u00a0 I know enough to be dangerous, as the saying goes.<\/p>\n

I know nothing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Facts, collected.\u00a0 Studies, numbers, questions asked and answered.\u00a0 Papers and papers and papers written.\u00a0 Case studies, caseloads, observations, tests, clients.<\/p>\n

Now, I sit in front of my eight-year-old daughter to explain suicide.<\/p>\n

I know the facts.\u00a0 It is not about willpower or lack of love.\u00a0 A parent doesn\u2019t leave a child willingly.<\/p>\n

Right?<\/em><\/p>\n

My heavy heart blocks my knowledgeable brain.\u00a0 My fear of \u201chard things\u201d keeps me from meeting her eye.\u00a0 My palms are sweating and I can feel the prick of tears beginning.<\/p>\n

This <\/em>is not train-able.\u00a0 No class, seminar, or test for this moment.\u00a0 I am a mom, with her daughter, summoning courage.<\/p>\n

Not finding it.\u00a0 Digging deep.\u00a0 Wanting to punt to my husband.<\/em><\/p>\n

But I know this is it.\u00a0 This is the work.\u00a0 These are the crossroad moments; the moments where I accept the truth<\/em> and teach that truth<\/em> to my daughter.\u00a0 And truth, no matter how painful, is not worse than the cover-up.\u00a0 Ever.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This is not a brain issue\u2026this is a heart issue.\u00a0 Courage, from the French for heart, \u201cCoeur.\u201d\u00a0 To find the heart to do something\u2026something hard.<\/p>\n

I have been thinking that is it our human instinct to shrink from challenge, that fear<\/em> is our instinct.\u00a0 But I think I\u2019m wrong.\u00a0 Our hearts are<\/em> courageous, we just get in the habit of listening to our fearful brains.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She will understand a heartbreaking part of the world\u2026a part where people are so sad and depressed; they listen to the voice that says, \u201cenough.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A deep breath.<\/p>\n

Faith in strength.\u00a0 Faith in love.\u00a0 Faith in courage.\u00a0 Faith in her.<\/p>\n

Faith in myself<\/em>.<\/p>\n
