I am forever telling my five-year-old it is “TIME TO GET DRESSED.”<\/p>\n

It starts kind. \u00a0It starts quiet. \u00a0It starts with a gentle touch; a sweet reminder.<\/p>\n

And before I know it, I am yelling up the stairs, threatening, and invoking my own mother so very well. \u00a0“That’s it<\/em>! \u00a0I’ve had it!”<\/p>\n

This dance, this struggle, is frequent enough that it deserves my attention. \u00a0My REAL attention. \u00a0And it needs me to do something different<\/em>, for the love of Pete.<\/p>\n

So, this morning, I could feel the slow dance beginning and picking up speed. \u00a0The 5 year old defiantly and happily bounded down the basement steps (the opposite<\/strong> direction of her clothing), and I stared at my husband with wide eyes. \u00a0Click. \u00a0Okay, something different.<\/p>\n

“Mark, we are not going to say one more word about the damn clothes<\/em>. \u00a0I will find her clothes, bring them in the car, but that is it<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

He nodded in silent agreement, happy to be freed from the usual “DO something with that horrid child” he usually gets.<\/p>\n

And don’t ya know it. \u00a0About 20 minutes before we were leaving, she found a dress, brushed her hair and teeth, got on her shoes, and happily bounded out to the car.<\/p>\n

Huh.<\/p>\n
